Genentech immunotherapy approved: treats advanced bladder cancer
On April 19th, Roche Group member Genentech announced that the US FDA has accelerated the approval of TECENTRIQ (atezolizumab) as the initial treatment for patients with advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) who are unable to receive cisplatin chemotherapy. TECENTRIQ has previously been approved for the treatment of patients with advanced mUC, or mUC patients have progressed during or after any platinum-containing chemotherapy, or mUC patients undergo chemotherapy after neoadjuvant surgery/adjuvant surgery The disease has progressed within 12 months.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than 80,000 American patients will be diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2017, the most common urothelial cancer. About 11% of new bladder cancer patients are diagnosed at the time of the disease, and the disease is unfortunately in the advanced stage. There is a significant difference in survival between early and late stage bladder cancer: when the disease is diagnosed at the earliest stage, approximately 96% of patients will survive for five years or longer; and at the stage of diagnosis of disease progression (III-IV) Among patients, the probability was only 39%. Men are three to four times more likely to develop bladder cancer than women in their lifetime. Up to half of patients with advanced bladder cancer cannot receive cisplatin chemotherapy as the initial treatment and therefore have high medical needs.
TECENTRIQ is a monoclonal antibody that targets PD-L1 protein binding. It binds PD-L1 expressed on tumor cells and tumor infiltrating immune cells and blocks its interaction with PD-1 and B7.1 receptors. . By inhibiting PD-L1, TECENTRIQ activates T cells and attacks tumor cells.
