Brain implant chip development is expected to treat post-traumatic stress syndrome

Release date: 2015-11-24

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently said that the latest chip implant research will be able to treat soldiers with post-traumatic stress syndrome in the Iraq war and the Afghanistan war.

Researchers at the organization say that wireless "neuronal prosthesis" brain implants will help restore memory function and treat traumatic brain damage.

The study is part of one of DARPA's many brain programs to restore the Active Memory Program (Ram). Researchers say that to make such a chip, solving the puzzle of how the brain encodes memory is the first step.

Once you understand the principles of brain-encoded memory, science and the ability to build computer models to simulate the function of the brain. Ultimately, researchers hope that implants can stimulate the loss of function due to neuronal or connective damage.

Scientists have experimented with patients with brain damage to test the ability of implants to improve memory. DARPA says that the use of surgically implanted temporary sensors can monitor signals when the brain forms and wakes up.

The Planning Bureau hopes to develop a permanent “closed loop” system in the future to help people wake up memories. Justin Sanchez, director of DARPA's biotechnology program, said: "When these fully implantable technologies make progress, we can learn more about how to stimulate the brain to achieve the best possible results. I think we are getting help in the war. The critical ability of the warriors and those with refractory neurological diseases."

DARPA offers $12 million to study brain tissue recording, prediction, and possible treatment of anxiety, depression, and other neurological diseases. The University of California, Lorenzo National Laboratory and Medtronic use funds to develop chips that can be implanted in the brain and connected through electrodes and brain. The military hopes that the prototype will be developed within five years and will be approved by the FDA.

The device will be able to record the individual's condition in anxiety or depression, and through remote control, the brain will establish a new circuit to avoid the damaged area.
