Da Vinci robotic treatment of lung cancer greatly reduces patient suffering

The new four-arm Da Vinci "electronic surgeon" was originally developed for prostate disease, and now NHS experts in the UK use the device to treat lung cancer.

This innovation allows patients with lung cancer surgery to be discharged within two days, with minimal postoperative pain.

Cardiac surgeon Sasha Stamenkovic said that he mainly used Da Vinci robots to remove lung tumors, which has a lower impact on patients than other endoscopic surgical procedures.

The Da Vinci system is activated by a doctor operating the camera, and the surgeon can control the robot's arm through the console's handle and foot pedal. The hydraulic arm follows the operator's movement, effectively combining the human and the machine into an "electronic person."

As shown in the figure, the machine can be positioned and removed without compressing the ribs when contacting and grasping the tumor. Compression ribs in traditional laparoscopic, drilling or lung surgery are the most important surgical pains.

Mr. Stamenkovic said that this is a huge improvement in the treatment of lung cancer, which can bring obvious benefits to patients. His team has used the Da Vinci robot to treat 30 lung cancer patients in the past year, and they will present their findings at the World Congress of Cardiothoracic Surgery in September.

Newcastle Hospital currently has two Da Vinci robots for the treatment of cancer patients such as prostate, gynecology, liver and rectum.
