Sanofi joins Google: improving diabetes prognosis
Release date: 2015-09-07
Google Inc. has announced that it is working with Sanofi, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, and the French pharmaceutical giant, to provide comprehensive solutions for people with diabetes.
French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi recently announced that it will work with Alphabet's Google Life Sciences division to improve clinical care and prognosis in patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
The collaboration will combine Sanofi's leadership in diabetes drugs and devices, as well as Google's expertise in data analysis, mini-electronics and low-power chips, to enable the integration of previously isolated modules in diabetes management. New tools and new care interventions to explore how to improve diabetes management.
This signal suggests that Google hopes to do more research involving biomedicine. Google co-founder Sergey Brin said the company's life science-related research will be spun off into an independent company alongside the new Google.
The recent hiring of several prominent scientists in immunology, neuroscience, and nanoengineering in recent months has also proved its ambitions in the life sciences.
For Google, diabetes is a logical starting point. Previously, Google's Life Sciences Division plans to develop contact lenses for monitoring blood sugar levels, and signed an agreement with medical device company DexCom to create a cheap, convenient, and able to connect to Yundun's blood glucose testing equipment. It is said that DexCom will be responsible for the development of sensors, and Google Life Sciences is responsible for miniaturization.
Google said that the focus on diabetes has freed it from the “technology-centric†path and transformed it into a “disease-centered†development path. But in fact, the Department of Life Sciences is still a technology company.
Google pointed out that sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels can cause serious heart attacks and strokes in diabetic patients, leading to irreversible nerve damage. Through the instant interconnection of cloud technology and data centers, Google hopes to use technology to prevent and mitigate such fluctuations.
According to Google, the new technology allows doctors to easily understand the daily blood glucose changes and real-time data of patients, thus providing timely and authoritative guidance for patients on diet and insulin consumption.
Previously, a new drug or a new medical technology often took years or even decades to enter the market. An important intent of Google's partnership with Sanofi is to speed up the transformation of results and make medical breakthroughs faster for patients.
Andy Conrad, CEO of Google Life Sciences, said that the emerging technology will provide a continuous, real-time monitoring of patients' health care, and we believe that the collaboration with Sanofi will make diabetes management easier and more convenient. Will help patients improve their quality of life.
