Successfully mapped the new human brain map of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Release date: 2016-06-22

It was learned from the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the team of the Brain Network Research Center of the Institute, together with other teams at home and abroad, successfully mapped out a new human brain map in six years: the brain network group map. Recently, this map is openly shared on its portal (http://atlas.brainnetome.org) and is available freely to researchers and clinicians in relevant research fields at home and abroad by means of online display and software download.

According to researcher Jiang Tianzi, the map includes 246 sub-regions of fine brain regions and multi-modal connection patterns in the sub-intervals of brain regions. It has broken through the traditional brain mapping ideas for more than 100 years and introduced the "brain structure and functional connection information" to the brain. The new ideas and methods for fine division of the area are 4 to 5 times finer than the commonly used Brodmann maps, with objective and accurate boundary positioning. This is also the first time in the world to establish a living whole brain connection map on a macro scale.

The human brain map is the cornerstone for understanding the structure and function of the brain. The most commonly used brain map is the brain partition map drawn by German neuroscientist Brodmann more than 100 years ago, namely the Brodmann map. Scientists have long wanted to be able to refine the Broadman map. Fan Lingzhong, a core member of the research team and associate researcher at the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: "The brain network map we have drawn is based on brain magnetic resonance imaging and quantitatively measures the anatomical connection information. It can not only be individualized, but also fine. Higher."

After the official release of the brain network group map, it immediately attracted great attention at home and abroad. The EU Human Brain Program is about to release the map publicly on its neuroinformatics platform, and the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Committee has also published the map online. Some commentators believe that the construction of brain network maps allows human brain maps to be drawn from specimens to living bodies, from coarse to fine, from a single anatomical description to a comprehensive description of integrated structures, functions and connection patterns. The brain's structure and function, understanding human cognition and behavioral processes have opened up new avenues. The results of this basic research also have very important application value, which not only provides important inspiration for the design of future brain-like intelligent systems, but also is helpful in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases, especially for stroke, epilepsy. New therapeutic techniques for neurological and psychiatric disorders provide accurate positioning.
