Ways to wean piglets
(1) One-time weaning method: When the weaning age is reached, the mother is separated once. It is common practice to drive the sows out of the original barn and leave all the piglets in the original bar for 1 week before transferring them to the nursery. This method saves labor, saves time, and is easy to operate. It also enables the sow to heat quickly after weaning and is suitable for large-scale pig farms. The shortcoming is that after a sudden weaning, the sows are prone to mastitis, and the piglets are suddenly stimulated by weaning to affect their growth and development. Therefore, the sow's feeding amount should be appropriately reduced about 3 days before weaning. (2) Batch weaning methods Weaned pigs according to their food intake, body weight, and physical fitness, and weaned the piglets with significant body weight, good growth, strong appetite, and good health. Weak, small individuals, poor development, and appetite Poor piglets continue to stay with the sows, and their breastfeeding period is appropriately extended to facilitate the growth of weak piglets. With this method, whole litter piglets can grow normally and avoid stiff pigs. However, weaning time is longer, affecting the development and mating of sows and affecting the number of litters per year. The nipple sucked by weaned piglets is called an empty nipple and is susceptible to mastitis. (3) Gradually weaning method 4 to 5 days before weaning of piglets, the sows are rushed to the place farther from the original circle, and the sows are put back into the original circle for breast milk several times a day to reduce the number of times of returning to breast-feeding daily. 4 to 5 times a day, 3 to 4 times on the second day, and breastfeeding on the third to fifth days. This method can avoid sow mastitis or gastro-intestinal diseases in piglets. It is more beneficial to mothers and piglets, but it is more troublesome, time-consuming and labor-consuming, and is not suitable for sows and piglets raised on the bed.
