New stereoscopic endoscopy for better examination of precancerous lesions

Release date: 2013-08-08

Because of the early diagnosis of cancerous polyps, colonoscopy saves tens of thousands of people every year. However, two-dimensional imaging technology makes lesions not so easy to see, and many precancerous lesions inevitably progress to the cancer level.
Recently, a consortium called Madrid-MIT M+Vision achieved two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging of the interior of the colon wall by means of an endoscopic technique called photometric stereo. From the information disclosed by the alliance, we can learn the following:
Stereoscopic optical imaging technology is derived from computer vision technology that restores the topography of a surface by measuring the distance between multiple sources and the surface. These distances are used to calculate the slope of the associated source to the surface, producing an appearance of any bumps or other surface features.
However, these researchers must correct this original technique because no one can understand the exact distance between the endoscope tip and the colon surface. Therefore, the original image will definitely be distorted, especially in areas where the surface height changes gradually.
To eliminate these distortions, the researchers invented a way to filter out spatial information in a smooth plane. This conclusive technique requires a minimum of three light sources, not to calculate the exact height or length of the surface, but rather to produce a visual representation that allows the examiner to determine whether it is a defect or a polyp.
It is reported that the researchers have established two prototypes, one with a diameter of 35mm, which is too large to be used for colonoscopy. One with a diameter of 14 mm is a typical size for colonoscopy. In the artificial silicon prosthesis colon test, the researchers found that both prototypes can produce a three-dimensional appearance of polyps or flat lesions.
