Genomics detection of Phanerochaete chrysosporium complete

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) announced that they have solved a preliminary draft of the genome sequence of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, a white rotting fungus. This fungus is the only microorganism known to have the ability to decompose the aromatic plant polymer lignin efficiently. The decomposition of Phanerochaete chrysosporium plays a key role in the carbon cycle, decomposing from the carbon of the organism and becoming inorganic carbon in the air. They also showed that this fungus can also decompose toxic pollutants such as explosive pollutants, pesticides, and chemical structures similar to lignin. This research report was published in the May 2 online version of Nature Biotechnology. The understanding of the genomic sequence of this bacterium is the first step in understanding their complex chemical reaction mechanisms. This organism has the ability to perform some unique and complex biochemical reactions. If we have a genetic blueprint in our hands, we can begin to understand how white rot fungi can degrade lignin, which is further used in the field of biomedicine.
