According to foreign media reports, the surgeons of the Presbyterian Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) will cool down the ten sudden death patients at the end of this month, putting them in a state of suspended animation. Although they are in a state of suspended animation, the doctors will repair the structural trauma caused by knives or bullets on their bodies, and then resurrect them by warming and other measures.
During the course of the experiment, all of the patient's blood will be replaced by cold saline, so their body will quickly drop to 10 degrees Celsius, and almost all cell activity will stop. Surgeon Samuel Tisherman said: "We are suspending life, but we don't like to call it a suspended animation because it sounds like science fiction. We call it emergency protection and recovery."
Peter Rhee of the University of Arizona added: "If a patient is treated two hours after death, we can't save him. If they are in a state of sudden death and you suspend their lives, you have a chance to save by repairing their physical wounds. Their lives."
When the body is at normal body temperature, the cells need a sufficient supply of oxygen, which means that the heart stops beating and can cause rapid death. But when the body temperature drops, the cells need less oxygen, which gives the doctor time to save the patient. The current technology for cooling the body takes too long, so doctors must find a way to cool the body more quickly.
In 2002, researchers at the University of Michigan tested a new technique on pigs. They replaced the pig's blood with cold saline. Once the pig's body temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius, their wounds are sutured and their body temperature is raised again. Normal saline will also be replaced by their blood. Most of the pig's heart beats again and there are no long-term side effects.
Medical workers now intend to try this technology on humans. The patient participating in the trial must be a patient who has a heartbeat due to injury and is unable to resurrect through traditional medical techniques. The body temperature of these patients will drop within 15 minutes, their body will temporarily have no blood, and there is no breathing and any brain activity. From a professional point of view, they are in a state of sudden death. Doctors hope that these patients will then naturally wake up, and if they can't wake up naturally, they will be revived by doctors.
