The study is considered to be promising, but further research is needed to verify it.
Many tumors undergo metabolic changes that show an increase in glucose uptake, which raises the question: Can taking different types of sugar affect tumor growth?
In view of this, the British Cancer Research Center scientist Kevin Lane and colleagues, in the latest experiments studied the effects of mannose on tumor cell growth. They report that mannose slows tumor cell growth and suggests that mannose may interfere with glucose metabolism. In addition, the use of the chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin or doxorubicin to take mannose significantly increased cell death.
The researchers allowed tumor mice to take mannose through a feeding tube (three times a week) and drinking water (continuously). The results show that this therapy is well tolerated and appears to slow tumor growth either alone or in combination with doxorubicin.
The sensitivity of cells to mannose is associated with lower levels of phosphomannose isomerase (PMI). The team tested PMI levels in cells from different human tumors (ovarian, kidney, breast, prostate, and colorectal) and the results were mixed. Of particular note is that colorectal tumors have lower levels of PMI, which means they may be more sensitive to mannose. In addition, tumors in mice with colorectal cancer were significantly reduced after taking mannose.
The researchers concluded that mannose therapy may represent a simple and safe method of targeting multiple tumor growth.
