Popular Science: Healthy Eating Helps Prevent and Control Asthma
Asthma is a common chronic airway inflammation that seriously affects the quality of life of patients. A study published in the new issue of the European Journal of Respiratory Medicine shows that adhering to a healthy diet can help prevent asthma, relieve symptoms, and better control the condition.
Researchers from the 13th University of Paris, France, collected health data on asthma and diet in about 35,000 French adults through questionnaires. Among them, the researchers used asthma symptom scores to examine the asthma status of the respondents, and the asthma control test (ACT) to investigate asthma control. The Asthma Control Test is an effective tool for monitoring and assessing asthma in the clinic.
The results of the analysis showed that, overall, men who adhered to a healthy diet had a 30% lower probability of developing asthma symptoms, and women who adhered to a healthy diet had a 20% lower probability of developing asthma symptoms. For people who already have asthma, the likelihood of "difficult to control" symptoms in men and women who insist on a healthy diet is reduced by about 60% and 27%, respectively.
In this study, a healthy diet refers to the large consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Unhealthy diet refers to a large amount of meat, as well as high-salt and high-sugar diets.
The researchers said the study provides new ideas for diet prevention and control of asthma in adults. Next, they will delve into the specific mechanisms by which healthy diets can effectively alleviate asthma symptoms.
