Popular Science: High protein breakfast helps reduce weight

Eat well early. Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization recently published a study that believes that eating protein-rich foods for breakfast is beneficial to weight loss.

The report entitled "Protein Balance: A New Concept for Protein in Weight Management" reported that the latest scientific evidence supports the conclusion that eating at least 25 grams of protein per meal is beneficial for controlling hunger and enhancing muscle metabolism. Eating protein-rich foods for breakfast reduces hunger and helps with weight management.

Manny Noyak, who is responsible for the project, said that the average Australian breakfast intake of protein is much smaller than the other two meals. Increasing protein intake during breakfast helps control appetite for the rest of the day. "If you find it difficult to control your appetite, eating more protein-rich foods at breakfast is a good way to lose weight, not feel particularly hungry, and not particularly defile unhealthy foods."

The report encourages people to consume more protein at breakfast, but for most Australians, protein intake is mostly at dinner time and breakfast is only a small part. An average of 11 grams of protein is eaten by women in the country, and 15 grams for men. Older people consume less protein for breakfast, but older people actually need more protein.

Noah said that two out of every three Australian adults are overweight or obese, which increases their risk of chronic diseases. Scientific evidence supports the idea that reducing fat requires more protein-rich foods, combined with exercise.

High-protein, moderate-carbohydrate, low-GI (glucose-producing index) diets are ways to reduce weight and have long been scientifically proven. However, the report found that one-third of the protein in Australian diets comes from low-quality foods such as processed foods, rather than high-quality sources such as lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, and dairy products.
