Using light to manipulate cell division for the first time

Through a joint study, the Nagoya University and the National Institute of Genetics of Japan have developed the use of light-manipulating human endogenous protein localization technology to successfully manipulate the arrangement of cell division (spindle) for the first time.

The arrangement of the spindle determines the direction of cell division and the size of the daughter cells. It can determine whether the mother cell is split into two identical daughter cells or two different daughter cells, which play an important role in cell division. Reasonable alignment of the spindle is the basis of the constituent cells, but it has not been known how the force of the moving spindle is generated. The R&D team used this newly developed technology to manipulate the positioning of multiple candidate factors and identified human genes sufficient to generate spindle traction.

This finding is expected to further understand the role of cell division in the formation of the human body, as well as the relationship between division failure and disease.
