Scientists have found that under existing antiretroviral therapy (ART), even with unprotected sex, the risk of HIV infection is still 0%! This research also allowed humans to stand at the historical node of the eradication of AIDS.

AIDS is a widely-affected disease with approximately 40 million patients worldwide. The history of this disease is not far away: in June 1981, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first case of AIDS. But in just over 30 years, people quickly figured out the pathogenesis behind it and developed innovative drugs from generation to generation. Nowadays, under the influence of drugs, AIDS is no longer equivalent to the "death penalty", but has become a controllable chronic disease.

Antiretroviral therapy plays an important role in the fight against AIDS in humans. Directly hitting the ART of the virus can effectively reduce the viral load in the patient. Scientists have also observed in past studies that the lower the viral load in a patient, the less likely it is to transmit the virus to others.
But the researchers point out that most of the past research has focused on heterosexual partners, and the data for gay couples is still quite inadequate. To this end, the researchers recruited 972 gay couples in 14 European countries, one of whom was HIV-positive and treated with ART to control the condition. The other side is negative for HIV infection. Subsequently, the researchers followed them for a long-term follow-up, with a median follow-up of 2 years. During the effective follow-up period, these volunteers reported a total of 76,088 unprotected behaviors. In this way, researchers were able to assess whether the HIV virus would continue to spread under the influence of ART therapy.

During the follow-up, a total of 15 HIV-negative volunteers became positive for HIV infection, indicating that they were infected with HIV during this period. But by analyzing the genetic sequences of the viruses in their bodies, the researchers found that the viruses were not from their fixed partners. This number is also consistent with the results of the survey—in this study, nearly 300 HIV-negative volunteers and other sexual partners experienced unprotected behavior.
Combining these results, the researchers made the interpretation that the actual infection rate of HIV can be reduced to 0% through ART treatment!
Combining the data previously obtained in heterosexual couples, the researchers noted that their findings underscore the notion of “U=Uâ€, which means that if the virus level cannot be detected, the virus cannot be transmitted (undetectable equals untransmittable). In other words, if the test is diagnosed as early as possible and the drug is used for effective treatment to control the level of the virus in the body, no new cases will be produced!

â–² With the continuous introduction of new methods of diagnosis and treatment, by 2030, the number of new AIDS patients is expected to be controlled within 200,000 per year (Source: World Health Organization)
"Our study provides definitive evidence that HIV infection rates among male homosexuals are zero under ART treatment!" Alison Rodger, a professor of the University of London, said: "This powerful message can help Prevent HIV infection, stop the HIV epidemic, and alleviate the shame and discrimination faced by many HIV patients."
