When the water temperature is relatively high, many female fish fry appear false male phenomenon, and the male proportion in fry can increase to about 70%. When the temperature is low, the proportion of males in the fry is also increased, and the proportion is about 60%. Therefore, the high temperature has a greater effect on the development of gonadal glands in the semi-smooth tongue. According to the existing literature, when the water temperature for raising seedlings is around 24 degrees, the ratio of male to female in fry is close to 1:1.

Breeders often discard small fish when they breed semi-slip tongues. This leads to the loss of some male phenotypes, which increases the proportion of males. The current experiments show that the temperature only affects the development of female gonads and does not affect the development of male gonads. This is another important reason for the low female rate during the process of culturing the semi-slip tongue.
