Sanofi and Voluntis team up to launch the Type 2 Diabetes Digital Insulin Management System

Release date: 2017-03-17

French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi and French medical software developer Voluntis recently announced that they have signed a non-exclusive agreement to introduce a type 2 diabetes (T2D) digital insulin management system in the United States and several European countries.

The system uses Insulia, a mobile app designed to improve decision making and self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes for basic insulin therapy, and it also enables the healthcare team to remotely monitor patient medication. Insulia has developed diabetes patients for the treatment of basal insulin, which is classified as a prescription medical device and has been certified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Union Product Safety (CE) in 2016.

In the past few years, Sanofi and Voluntis have been working together to develop innovative digital solutions for diabetes. The two parties initially formed an alliance in 2011 to develop Diabeo, a software medical device designed to help diabetic patients in France manage basal insulin therapy.

The non-exclusive agreement reached will fully utilize Sanofi's innovation in diabetes treatment and Voluntis' experience in developing supporting software, which will expand the scope and geographic area of cooperation and further strengthen the current alliance.

Sanofi and Voluntis have plans to launch pilot programs in the United States and selected European countries. Peter Guenter, executive vice president of diabetes and cardiovascular therapy at Sanofi, said that despite the continued advancement of drugs in the field of diabetes treatment, the patient's prognosis has not improved sufficiently, and more than half of the patients are not well controlled. To this end, Sanofi is currently focusing on developing a way to go beyond the drug itself. Since diabetes management is a 24/7 work, the right tools are needed to achieve a better prognosis, and a long-term alliance with Voluntis will help the company achieve this goal.
